India 8-4 ahead in head to head encounters

After a miraculous escape against Bangladesh wherein India took 3 wickets of last 3 balls of the match to win the encounter by a solitary run, India has somehow managed to stay alive in the tournament. But it would take a lot more from here on if they are to go all the way to win this world cup.

As we approach towards the closing of the group stages, New Zealand has already booked themselves a place in the semi-finals winning all their four matches. With Pakistan and Bangladesh out of contention for the semis, it has boiled down to two giants of world cricket- India and Australia- to seal a spot in the semi-finals when they face off each other at Mohali on 27th of March in what would be virtual quarterfinals for both the teams. It’s a do or die encounter for both the teams. A win and you keep your hopes alive for the glittering trophy. Instead, you lose and you are sent packing as early as in the first stage of the tournament itself. Thus, reputation is what is at stake for the teams as they get ready for their all important encounter.

India’s Blemishing Top Order

In stark contrast to previous tournaments, India’s top order is suffering from consistent failures. Rohit Sharma seems to have lost a bit of his touch but the major reason for worry has been Shikhar Dhawan as run flow seem to have frozen off his bat for quite some time now. Together the Indian openers have not been able to provide any sort of starts which the middle order could capitalise upon. As a pair, they have managed just 61 runs from 3 outings at a lowly average of 20 in this edition of WC.

Virat Kohli, as has been for the past 5 years, forms the pillar of this batting lineup with his hot form. Suresh Raina finally found some form in the encounter against Bangladesh with a well-paced innings. Yuvraj and Dhoni, though in the autumn of their careers, are chipping in with some useful contributions regularly with the bat.

Coming to the bowling department, it seems to be doing pretty fine. Nehra, Bumrah, Pandya, Ashwin, Jadeja all seem to be in good form.

In-form Australia

Compared to the hosts, Australia seems to be in good form going into this encounter. Shifting of Warner to the middle order seems to have added depth to their batting order. The likes of big-hitters Khwaja, Finch, Maxwell, Watson and captain Smith itself would be very hard to contain for the Indians.

The bowling department also seems to be an in-form unit. James Faulkner is fresh from a 5-wicket haul against Pakistan and would like to combine well again with Hazlewood and others to restrict the Indians. Though they seem to be a bit short in the spin department with only Zampa taking care of it.

Yuvi Factor

Whenever it’s an India – Australia clash, keeping Yuvraj out of it would be like asking for an apple without its seeds. The Aussies seem to pump Yuvraj up. More often than not, he has come out on top against them, be it the 50 over format or the 20 over format. He averages a staggering 65 plus against them in the shortest format as against his overall average of about 30. Back to his home ground, Yuvraj would like to once again repeat his heroics against the kangaroos and inspire India into the semi-finals.

Analysing the way things have panned out for both the teams, the pre-match battle seems to be in balance. The team which holds their nerves will be the one on top at the end of 40 overs and still in with a chance to realise their dream of winning this edition of the world cup.
